-Cash for Clunkers: Another stupid liberal idea that does more harm than good

Here's the problem with the Cash for Clunkers program that has been talked about so much on the news. It's another stupid leftist program simple as that. It's all just getting ridiculous.

The Cash for Clunkers program is stupid for a lot of reasons. Not only is it just another tax-payer bailout of the unions automakers, who can sell more cars at artificially depressed prices so they can keep the doors open. It also screws with the free-market (big surprise there) by pulling forward demand that isn’t there now, only to kill demand over the next 1-2 years. Killing off the clunkers also hurts the used car market, the spare parts market, and the auto repair business. If there aren’t any old cars to buy or fix, those guys are all out of a job.

But one of the most asinine parts of the plan is that they take old cars, many of which were being used as functional day-to-day transportation the day before, and destroy them. A perfectly good and useful machine destroyed for political reasons…

In a normal world, you take your trade-in to the dealer, he buys it from you, and then he resells it at the auto auction. It is the most efficient allocation of resources for the product. In this case, the government buys your trade-in and, instead of using it for its full value, it destroys the vehicle.

I know people will say that some of these cars were maintenance disasters to own and if the blue book is less that what someone will pay you for it, then there is no point in keeping it. But the Cash for Clunkers program requires that a working vehicle be destroyed. What about giving it to charity, or to your teenager, or to whomever deems the thing more useful than a $4,500 credit on a new car.

Van Jones, self proclaimed Communist and Obama's Green Jobs Czar, has produced zero jobs.

Van Jones, one of many of Obama's czars, was allotted $60 billion in Obama's massive "stimulus" bill. How many "green" jobs has he produced? Or any jobs for that matter? Not 1000, not 100, not 1. Zero. And who reported this sad fact? Not the evil Fox News, not the Wall Street Journal, not even CNN, but Newsweek. The same Newsweek whose staff wrote the adoring book A Long Time Coming about Obama and his campaign.

President Obama devoted nearly $60 billion of his stimulus package to building a new green-based economy rich in renewable energy and strategies to cut carbon. But despite the price tag, not one green job yet exists.

Hmm...I'm betting we'll never see a "green job" from this administration, just more spending.

Speers: Is it a job or is it a work experience program?

Arbib: A work experience program is a job. They’ll be actually working during this time.

Speers: When you say it’s a job, do they get sick leave? Do they get superannuation? How is it just not the same as the work for the dole scheme?

Arbib: Well, I don’t have all the details.

Speers: But you’re the minister.

Arbib: Well, I am, but I don’t have all the details today for you mate. But what I can tell you …

Speers: But it’s just been announced by the Prime Minister.

Arbib: 10,000 young people, 26 weeks’ training, plus work, day after day, it’s a great, great result.

Speers: But it is still being worked out.

Arbib: No, no, this scheme will be under way in January 2010, and obviously some of the detail will still have to be finalized, but …

Speers: Is one of those details whether it will be a job or work experience?

Arbib: Well, well … it’s a fine line but can I tell you it is work experience. Work experience is a job.

President Obama’s top science adviser said in a book he co-authored in 1973 that a newborn child “will ultimately develop into a human being” if he or she is properly fed and socialized.

“The fetus, given the opportunity to develop properly before birth, and given the essential early socializing experiences and sufficient nourishing food during the crucial early years after birth, will ultimately develop into a human being,” John P. Holdren, director of the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy, wrote in “Human Ecology: Problems and Solutions.”

“There seems little doubt that the forced bearing of unwanted children has undesirable consequences not only for the children themselves and their families but for society as well, apart from the problems of overpopulation,” wrote the authors.

“Those who oppose abortion often raise the argument that a decision is being made for an unborn person who ‘has no say,’” write the authors. “But unthinking actions of the very same people help to commit future unheard generations to misery and early death on an overcrowded planet.”

“The third approach to population control is that of involuntary fertility control,” write the Ehrlichs and Holdren. “Several coercive proposals deserve discussion mainly because societies may ultimately have to resort to them unless current trends in birth rates are rapidly reversed by other means.”

“Compulsory control of family size is an unpalatable idea, but the alternatives may be much more horrifying” the authors state at the end of the subsection. “As those alternatives become clearer to an increasing number of people in the 1970s, we may well find them demanding such control. A far better choice, in our view, is to begin now with milder methods of influencing family size preferences, while ensuring that the means of birth control, including abortion and sterilization, are accessible to every human being on Earth within the shortest possible time. If effective action is taken promptly, perhaps the need for involuntary or repressive measures can be averted.”

Dear Leader Obama has certainly surrounded himself by radicals. The worst thing about this guy is that unlike many of Obama's other czars, Holdren was approved by the Senate because he was also appointed to the director of the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy. Sad. Let's hope America wakes up to this nonsense by 2012, or it might be too late.

Rahm Emanuel, Obama's right hand lackey, is probably to Obama what Cheney was to Bush. Rahm "Dead Fish" Emanuel is a piece of work. His brother, Ezekiel? Another thing entirely. His views are, sadly and as fear-mongering as it sounds, reminiscent of the practices of the Nazi regime. Not only does he apparently advocate rationing of health care, but...well just read on as the New York Post documents the lunacy. Oh did we mention that Ezekiel holds the key positions of health-policy adviser at the Office of Management and Budget, and is a member of Federal Council on Comparative Effectiveness Research.

...(Emanuel) wants doctors to look beyond the needs of their patients and consider social justice, such as whether the money could be better spent on somebody else.

Many doctors are horrified by this notion; they'll tell you that a doctor's job is to achieve social justice one patient at a time.

Emanuel, however, believes that "communitarianism" should guide decisions on who gets care. He says medical care should be reserved for the non-disabled, not given to those "who are irreversibly prevented from being or becoming participating citizens … An obvious example is not guaranteeing health services to patients with dementia" (Hastings Center Report, Nov.-Dec. '96).

Translation: Don't give much care to a grandmother with Parkinson's or a child with cerebral palsy.

Here's how Ezekiel defends denying healthcare to the elderly:

Unlike allocation by sex or race, allocation by age is not invidious discrimination; every person lives through different life stages rather than being a single age. Even if 25-year-olds receive priority over 65-year-olds, everyone who is 65 years now was previously 25 years

And do you know what the worst part of this is? Ezekiel is right. If ObamaCare does, God help us, come to pass, this is how it will have to be due to high demand, a larger clientele base, and a dwindling number of doctors.
